About
Environmental and human rights groups have been working on coal issues for decades. Power Past Coal is an attempt to unite these efforts and amplify the message: The United States needs to move past coal power. With the help of the Power Past Coal project, regional actions will gain momentum and transform into a national movement.
One Woman's Testament to the Community Fight Against Coal
Marie Gladue served as one of Power Past Coal's six coalfield delegates on April 30th, the 100th day of action. Here, Gladue reflects on her journey to Washington D.C. for the Capitol Climate Action, when she first realized that the fight against her home's destruction was larger than even she could imagine.
About the Life Cycle of Coal
The entire life cycle of coal is dirty and irresponsible. Our nation needs to stop building new coal-fired power plants, put an end to mountain removal mining, and reinvest in communities that have been harmed by coal. Click above for some facts on the US coal cycle.
Our Volunteer Team
Power Past Coal is the product of a nation-wide collaboration among many supporting organizations and a diverse team of volunteers. These volunteers, all clean energy and justice advocates in their own communities, first convened in Charleston, West Virginia on November 15th, 2008. Together, they planned the 100 Days of Action project in order to amplify their collective voice, add value to their local work, and build a national movement to power past coal.
Participants
The Power Past Coal project is unique in its truly collaborative nature: it exists for you, and for the sake of building our movement. Anyone can participate in the Power Past Coal project. Simply send us a note of your support and register an action on our website.
100 Days of Action
In the 100 days after President Obama's inauguration, communities took action every day to tackle one of the most serious justice issues in America: coal. We rallied and marched, passed legislation and blocked new coal plants. But our work isn't over yet. Join thousands of citizens in demanding a swift and just transition away from coal. First, tell your story to Obama and Congress.
